The Red Army Battle Site at Zengziya On December 30 of the lunar calendar in 1933, the forces under Xu Xiangqian and Li Xiannian of the Fourth Red Army Front, led by then-Machine Gun Company Commander Hong Xuezhi, marched along Daobeiliang to the foot of the Nationalist army’s bunker at their camp in Zengziya. Using the tactic of luring the enemy away from their stronghold, they provoked the Nationalists to leave their fortifications and pursue them. Seizing the opportunity, they occupied the Nationalist bunker camp at Zengziya and pursued the retreating Nationalist troops, driving them to the low, steep slope of Yanjiaya. At a distance of 150 meters across on Bijiutian Ridge, the Red Army set up a machine gun position and annihilated an entire battalion of the Nationalist forces. Local residents later collected the bodies of the Nationalist soldiers and buried them at Yanjiaya, referring to the site as “Ten Thousand Man Pit.” Today, remnants of the bunkers from the Zengziya battle site still remain, offering a glimpse into the intensity of the battle that took place there.
