Yujia Cave

Yujia Cave: Located within the Xiaowu Gorge Scenic Area, this cave remains undeveloped. Situated over 200 meters high on a cliff, it can only be reached via a man-made path less than 0.6 meters wide. Legend has it that during the “Eight Great Kings’ Campaign to Suppress Sichuan,” scattered remnants of the defeated troops roamed the Tuban River area, pillaging and slaughtering. The local people fled in all directions. Among them, Yue Huang and Yue Tang, who lived in the area, escaped into this cave. Leveraging the natural defenses, they managed to fend off the pursuing remnants. After laying siege for several days, the remnants heard the sounds of pigs being slaughtered from inside the cave. The rebel leader said, “We can’t do anything to them. Let’s pull back to the Kuixing Hall at Ma’eryuan and celebrate with drinks tonight. We’ll withdraw back to our base tomorrow.” That very night, seeing that the remnants had retreated, the Yue brothers quietly slipped out of the cave and went to Ma’er Yuan to investigate. They found the remnants drinking heavily from large bowls. When the enemies were thoroughly drunk, the brothers noticed several pots of boiling oil with meat in them. They filled buckets with the scalding oil and poured it onto the remnants, killing and injuring many. The remnants fled that very night. From then on, the villagers gradually returned to their homes and lived in peace. Later, to commemorate the two brothers, the locals named the cave “Yujia Cave.”
