Dabaiyan Dragon Cave: A historical site located in the northern part of Meiling’s Fourth Community. Nestled at the foot of a cliff, this cave has an ancient temple just above its entrance, housing a variety of Buddha statues and tended by a dedicated nun. Many come here to pray during festivals. The dragon cave itself extends about 200 meters deep, and a stream usually flows out noisily from within. There is a legend that goes: “Once upon a time, a farming family surnamed Xue lived here. One of them, named Xue Tongzi, was said to possess great Taoist magical powers. One day, while weeding the fields with his sister-in-law, he took a rest and said to her, ‘Watch me ride a dragon out of the cave — but when I come out, don’t be afraid. Call me Xue the Immortal, and never call me Xue Tongzi.’ His sister-in-law agreed and waited as he rested. Before long, Xue the Immortal indeed emerged from the cave riding a green dragon. The sister-in-law exclaimed, ‘Xue the Immortal — how wonderful!’ He then rode back into the cave. The second time, he came out riding a multicolored dragon. She remarked that it was even more magnificent than the green one. He went back inside once more. The third time, he rode out a fiery dragon. The sister-in-law, startled by its appearance, cried out, ‘Xue Tongzi, what on earth are you doing?’ In response, the dragon lashed its tail and knocked Xue Tongzi onto the rocks at the cave entrance. The dragon then disappeared back inside. Eventually, many Taoist priests had to be called in to retrieve Xue Tongzi’s body. To this day, the marks of Xue Tongzi’s body are still visible on those rocks.”
