Zigong Martyrs' Cemetery
Zigong Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism attraction.
Zigong Martyrs' Cemetery is located in Da'an District, Zigong City, nestled in the picturesque Zhakou Mountain surrounded by lush pine and cypress trees. Construction began in November 1984 with the approval of the Zigong Municipal People's Government. Since 1985, it has gradually started receiving visitors paying homage to the martyrs. Each year, the cemetery welcomes over one hundred thousand visitors and students. Zigong Martyrs' Cemetery was approved by the State Council on October 15, 1986, as one of the first batch of National Key Martyrs' Memorial Buildings under Protection. In January and December 1995, it was respectively designated as a Patriotic Education Base by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China and the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee and Government. In the same year, it was awarded the title of Advanced Unit in the Management of Martyrs' Memorial Buildings by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. In November 2009, it was named a Provincial Defense Education Base by the Sichuan Provincial Government. Zigong Martyrs' Cemetery is a full-budget public institution at the section level, covering an area of 43.02 mu (approximately 2.87 hectares) with a construction area of 2,140 square meters (including a display hall of 1,560 square meters, exhibition panels covering 567.83 square meters, 383 photos of martyrs, and 188 pieces of textual historical materials, relics, and artifacts). The exhibits include three nationally renowned martyrs: Lu Deming, overall commander of the Autumn Harvest Uprising forces and one of the 100 heroic role models who made outstanding contributions to the founding of New China; Deng Ping, Chief of Staff of the Red Third Army Corps and Commander of the Red Fifth Army; and Jiang Zhuyun (female), a heroine of Red Crag. It also honors three revolutionary pioneers from Zigong Salt Field—Xiao Fengjie and Fang Shiting—as well as 34 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during various periods of the Chinese revolution, plus a group sculpture commemorating a collective of martyrs. The cemetery features commemorative structures such as floral wreaths, a memorial monument, busts of notable martyrs, a martyrs’ tomb complex (which houses the remains of 40 martyrs including Zhu Houliang, who was posthumously awarded the title of Model Political Instructor by the Central Military Commission, as well as revolutionary pioneers of the Zigong Salt Field Xiao Fengjie and Fang Shiting), the Revolutionary Martyrs' Deeds Exhibition Hall, the Siyuan Corridor, the Jiyee Pavilion, and the “Eternal Life” group sculpture. Since its establishment, the cemetery has played a significant role in promoting the spirit of selflessness and sacrifice of revolutionary martyrs, educating the public—especially students—in inheriting and carrying forward revolutionary traditions, and inspiring them to actively contribute to Zigong’s development and the building of a harmonious society. The development of Zigong Martyrs' Cemetery has received strong support and collaboration from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Sichuan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs, the Zigong Municipal Party Committee, the Zigong Municipal Government, and all sectors of society. It has become a central patriotic education and red tourism base radiating across southern Sichuan. Address: Changyantang, Da'an District, Zigong City, Sichuan Province (local name: Zhakou Mountain)
The Revolutionary Martyrs' Deeds Exhibition Hall was built in 1988 with a construction area of 1,560 square meters. It features a unique and magnificent "tomb-style" architectural design. General Zhang Aiping inscribed the name “Revolutionary Martyrs' Deeds Exhibition Hall.” It officially opened to the public on March 12, 1992. The two-story-with-basement structure includes a ground floor lobby displaying calligraphy tributes to the martyrs by Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, and Liu Shaoqi. The front wall features an engraved map of Zigong listing the names of over 1,800 local martyrs. The two side sections depict armed struggle and underground resistance under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, while the center showcases the sculpture “Red Tide,” symbolizing the unstoppable momentum of the revolution. The second and third floors house the exhibition halls, where innovative display methods integrate photographs, relics, and historical artifacts with strong narrative impact. The total area of the exhibition panels is 567.83 square meters, featuring 383 photos of martyrs and 188 pieces of textual historical materials and revolutionary relics. The displays reflect the revolutionary struggles during different periods under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and have received praise from relevant leaders at the central, provincial, and municipal levels.
