Yangtou Mountain Forest Park

Category: Tourist Attractions 👁 100 views
Yangtou Mountain Forest Park is located in the suburbs of Qianjiang. It earned its name because its mountain shape resembles the head of a sleeping Buddha gazing up at the sky, visible from various viewpoints across Qianjiang city. Hidden within Yangtou Mountain’s winding ridges is another image of a female sleeping Buddha, formed naturally by four small rock formations. The craftsmanship is exquisite — featuring a full forehead, a delicate nose, lively lips, and a subtle chin. To observe it closely, one must climb to the Buddha Viewing Platform at the mountain’s summit. Hence, some also call Yangtou Mountain the “Mountain of Two Buddhas.” The male and female sleeping Buddhas together represent yin and yang balance, harmony between heaven and humanity. Their lifelike forms, masterfully shaped by nature, are the soul and essence of the scenic beauty at Yangtou Mountain Forest Park.

There is a beautiful legend about the origin of Yangtou Mountain: It is said that in ancient times, when Nüwa was mending the sky with five-colored stones, she looked down and saw this place — with undulating mountains, lush ancient trees, animals playing and birds singing, and wildflowers blooming in vibrant colors. Overwhelmed by the beauty, she casually pinched a lump of yellow clay and molded it into a man and a woman. From then on, these clay figures chopped wood to build homes, hunted, and cultivated the land, living and multiplying here. One day, after tiring themselves out, they lay down on the mountain to rest and fell into a deep sleep. In their dreams, a goddess appeared standing on a cloud, calling out: “Come with me quickly, why wait any longer?” In an instant, the souls of the clay figures floated away with the goddess, while their physical bodies turned into the rocky mountains that continue to watch over the land — becoming the marvelous landscape we can now admire.

Qianjiang’s Yangtou Mountain is a great leisure destination, known for its proximity to the city, dense forests, and well-developed tourist facilities. On holidays, bring your family or invite a few close friends to visit “Yangtou Mountain Forest Park.” Stroll along the shaded forest paths, take a rest in the pavilions atop mountain passes, and you’ll find the reputation is well deserved — the vivid giant sleeping Buddha lies quietly among the peaks, gazing up at the sky. It looks like an enlightened immortal or a thoughtful elder, offering a truly moving experience.

At Yangtou Mountain Forest Park, besides viewing the sleeping Buddha, one of the most delightful experiences is listening to the pine waves under the moonlight. On a full moon night when a gentle spring breeze is in the air, come to the park. Wait until the moon rises in the east, and then, without company, without light, and without noisy shoes, set off from Yangtou Mountain Hotel. Under the bright moonlight, walk lightly along the forest path, your long shadow trailing behind. As you stroll and admire the moonlit scenery, you’ll gain a feeling you can’t get during the day — the dark woods stand quietly on either side of the path, while silvery moonlight spills down from the treetops, casting dappled patterns on the white path. It stirs your heart, purifies and cleanses your spirit, and calms the restlessness of daytime, bringing a sense of peace you’ve never felt before. At the same time, as the wind blows, bringing a touch of coolness, you’ll feel every cell in your body open up, as if immersed in a hazy ocean — like a little fish riding wave after wave, accompanied by the chirps of night birds in the woods, the whispers from houses at the edge of the forest, distant barks, and the faint croaking of frogs. Before you know it, you’re completely enveloped in it all.

Sometimes it comes in wisps and strands: “Woo… woo… woo…” — Only the treetops sway gently in the breeze, as a soft wind approaches slowly from afar, then drifts away just as gently. It’s like a young girl walking toward you, softly greeting you, then just as softly walking away. These soft, whispering waves are like a gentle mountain stream, flowing smoothly from a distance, then quietly drifting away — no ups and downs, no dramatic changes, tender and relaxing, romantic and warm.

Other times it rolls in waves and surges: “Woo… woo!! Woo… woo!! Woo… woo!!” — Like successive breakers, surging forward in a crowd, rushing in without rhythm, order, or pattern. The trees in the forest dance passionately and wildly in the wind, following the direction it commands among the hills. The sound of the waves is like a sturdy man, striding in with a heavy load, then striding away the same way — his steps fast yet steady, full of vigor and vitality.

Sometimes the nearby sounds are soft and wispy, while the distant ones roll in waves; or the nearby waves crash while the far-off sounds are gentle strands. This variability and romance of nature surround you… Standing in the woods, you’ll feel your thoughts rising, falling, and flowing dynamically. It’s like drifting down a river — sometimes gliding through calm, rippling waters; other times suddenly entering a turbulent rapid, surrounded by foaming white water, making your thoughts moist and agile.

The best spots to listen to the forest waves at night on Yangtou Mountain are the Buddha Viewing Platform and the top of Hero Slope. Listening at the Buddha Viewing Platform makes you feel as if you’ve become one with the trees, swaying in the wind and creating waves of sound alongside them. The sleeping Buddha then seems like an elder lying with eyes closed, listening to your thoughts under the moonlight. Listening at the top of Hero Slope gives you a sense of detachment — the forest lies beneath your feet, and so do the waves of sound. It’s like standing on a seaside cliff, listening to the roar of the sea. While enjoying the music of nature, you can also hear the croaking of frogs in the rice fields below and gaze at the countless lights of Qianjiang city. In that moment, you’ll feel an unprecedented tranquility, a peaceful comfort of returning to nature.

The most wonderful experience is spending the night in a wooden cabin in the forest, leaving a small window slightly open, and lying on a soft, clean wooden bed. As the breeze stirs the trees, it also stirs your heart. There’s no sense of house or bed — you are a tree in the forest, swaying with the wind; you are a musical instrument, playing joyfully. Just before falling asleep, you may feel you’ve become a sleeping Buddha, lying on the earth as your bed and the mountains as your pillow, listening to the forest waves under the moonlight.
