Golden Jade Guanyin of Nanshan

The Golden Jade Guanyin of Nanshan is currently the world’s largest gold and jade Buddhist statue, proudly hailed by the people of Hainan as the “Treasure of the Island.” Enshrined within the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone in Sanya, Hainan, it is an important part of the Guanyin culture in the Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Park. This world-famous and exquisitely crafted golden-jade Guanyin statue is not only a treasured work of art embodying national character and contemporary spirit, but also a rare masterpiece in the history of contemporary arts and crafts as well as Buddhist statuary.

The Golden Jade Guanyin statue stands 3.8 meters tall and consists of four parts: the golden body of Guanyin, the halo of light, the thousand-petal precious lotus, and the wooden Sumeru base. It required over 100 kilograms of gold, more than 120 carats of South African diamonds, over 100 kilograms of jadeite, as well as thousands of other precious stones including rubies, sapphires, emeralds, coral, turquoise, and pearls. Its estimated value is 192 million RMB. The statue was crafted using the traditional Chinese imperial “court gold filigree” technique—one of the finest craftsmanship skills in the world—and was created through two years of painstaking effort by master artisans of China’s arts and crafts community.
