At 21:34 on December 12, a netizen posted on Weibo saying they were trapped on the cliffs at Sanya’s Xiaodonghai, rescue boats were unable to get close, and their phone only had 10% battery left, adding that they were waiting for help. Subsequently, reporters learned that due to rough seas and the abundance of shallow-water reefs near the cliffs, rescue boats were unable to approach the stranded individuals. So far, the Sanya Coast Guard Second Detachment, Sanya Fire Department, and Sanya Maritime Search and Rescue Sub-Center, among other departments, have been conducting a joint search and rescue operation for nearly 8 hours without success, and the rescue efforts are still ongoing.
According to a staff member from the Sanya Coast Guard, around 5:00 pm, they received a distress call and immediately dispatched a large patrol vessel to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the stranded individuals trapped on cliffs near the shallows. Due to the numerous reefs, the patrol vessel was unable to get close. The rescue operation then switched to using smaller boats, and staff from the Sanya Fire Department joined the effort. When they approached the target area, rescuers wearing life jackets prepared to swim to the rocks, but the rough seas prevented them from reaching the stranded individuals. After a prolonged rescue attempt, the effort was unsuccessful.
It is understood that the stranded individuals are a couple; the man’s surname is Cui. This afternoon, Cui and his girlfriend took a tricycle to Luhuitou Village in Sanya, then hiked along a small path, climbing over mountains and rocks. When they realized it was getting dark and tried to return, they got lost and ultimately became trapped on the cliffs.
As of now, the endangered individuals remain trapped on the cliffs, and the rescue operation is still ongoing.
