However, the term "First Market" now refers not only to this market itself but more broadly to the market and its surrounding commercial streets, including Xinmin Street, Ye Feng Lane, and the area around West Heping Road — an area densely packed with seafood processing shops.

The First Market is a top choice for many tourists looking to eat seafood. The seafood here is fresh and affordable. Buying seafood at the market and having it processed at a nearby shop is much cheaper than dining at big restaurants. Moreover, a wide variety of fruits and Hainan specialty snacks can be found both inside and outside the market.

There are numerous seafood processing shops in the First Market area, leading to fierce competition. As a result, you’ll see many touts trying to lure customers — don’t let them take you for a ride. Also, if you plan to buy seafood to cook yourself back at your accommodation, make sure to compare prices and shop around before purchasing, and stay vigilant against seafood being switched or substituted.

Many tourists research and choose well-reviewed processing shops online in advance. Upon arrival, head straight to these shops, which are typically located on the street opposite the First Market. Then, you can ask one of the shop’s experienced aunties to accompany you to pick out the seafood — they’re skilled in bargaining. This option is great for those who aren’t confident about shopping or selecting their own ingredients.

Sanya’s markets can be quite chaotic. When buying seafood, watch out for short measures — consider bringing a small scale just in case. When buying fish or shrimp, be aware that vendors may add lots of water to the bags; it’s best to poke a small hole to let the excess water drain out. But the most concerning issue is seafood being switched. Keep a close eye on the vendor’s hands — some are impressively quick at swapping your chosen live crabs with dead ones, almost like magic.

Aside from seafood, you can also sample many Hainan specialty snacks here, such as Hainan noodles, coconut milk cold jelly, glutinous rice cakes, coconut rice, Shanlan wine, and various other local treats, as well as a selection of freshly squeezed juices — particularly tempting are the fresh papaya juice and coconut juice.
