In Sanya, there is an unassuming Hainan clay art museum that often attracts people from the pottery industry and pottery enthusiasts. Those who don’t know much about it may think it’s just an ordinary pottery shop, but regular visitors know that the pottery jars fired here are unique and innovative. The potter can produce at least five different body colors from Hainan green clay, along with various kiln transformation effects — this potter is Wu Qianliang, who plays with “mud” in Sanya.

On the third floor of the clay art museum is a kiln where Wu Qianliang uses an alternating and overlapping firing method with both gas and electric kilns. This is a self-developed technique he devised after years of experience in pottery firing. Simply put, a single teapot may go through multiple rounds of firing in two kilns with completely different atmospheres — a gas kiln and an electric kiln. Each firing involves different settings such as temperature, control over oxidizing and reducing flames, kiln space design, airflow regulation, heating speed, humidity control inside the kiln, and duration of heat preservation. This is how he manages to achieve at least five different body colors from Hainan green clay, along with various kiln transformation effects.

From obscurity to recognition in the industry, Wu Qianliang’s clay art museum has welcomed batches of visitors, including students who have traveled from as far as Beijing to learn from him. Industry insiders call him the “Ghost Hand Pottery King,” praising his professionalism and exceptional pottery skills. Wu Qianliang has truly made a name for himself playing with mud, and even his relatives and friends now understand and appreciate it.
