East Bank Wetland Park

Spanning 1,003 mu, with water and land areas each accounting for about half, East Bank Wetland Park is the largest freshwater wetland within Sanya’s urban area. Its vegetation is arranged in a distinct layered, patchwork pattern, featuring background forests, wetland planting zones, terrace planting areas, and inner lake planting sections. The plant scheme primarily consists of single-species forests, with the royal poinciana chosen as the keynote tree species, accented in certain areas with palm plants. The royal poinciana, with its unique shape and vibrant colors, effectively reflects the local characteristics of Sanya.

Before the development of East Bank Wetland Park, the site was a large shantytown on Sanya’s East Bank, where numerous illegal dwellings had occupied drainage channels, turning what was once a vast wetland into a foul-smelling pond. Today, strolling through East Bank Wetland Park, visitors can see bougainvillea, royal poinciana trees, and a variety of naturally growing wildflowers and grasses swaying gently. In addition to lush greenery, the park is dotted with splashes of red, yellow, and pink blooms. A harmonious blend of colorful hues spreads across the landscape, creating a delightful scene filled with birdsong and floral scents that refreshes the spirit.

As the largest freshwater wetland in Sanya’s urban area, East Bank Wetland Park is located in the Yuechuan District to the north of the city center. The Yuechuan area is primarily designated for residential use and is an important housing cluster, making the provision of recreational services to nearby residents one of the park’s key functions. Additionally, the site was originally farmland, so the planting design adopts a productive landscape theme—serving local residents while also reviving the area’s original memory.

The wetland planting zone is situated on the wetland base formed by the ponds on the western side of the park. The selection of arboreal species mainly includes native fruit trees. With the backdrop of the background forest, the wetland planting zone features a rich diversity of plants, primarily incorporating alternating plantings of characteristic Sanya fruit trees such as breadfruit, longan, mango, and papaya.
