Giant Group Sculpture

Jianzhen (688–763 AD), a native of Yangzhou, originally surnamed Chunyu, was a renowned Buddhist monk of the Tang Dynasty. In 742 AD, he was invited by the Japanese Emperor to travel to Japan to spread Buddhist scriptures. He attempted the sea voyage six times, failing in the first five. In June 748 AD, Jianzhen and his 35 disciples set off from Yangzhou on their fifth attempt but were caught in a typhoon, drifting thousands of miles before landing near the mouth of the Ningyuan River (now part of the Tianya-Daxiaodongtian Scenic Area) in Zhēnzhōu (present-day Sanya City). They stayed in Zhēnzhōu for a year, building the Dayun Temple and spreading Buddhist culture. Jianzhen remained determined to travel to Japan to promote Buddhism and eventually succeeded on his sixth attempt in 753 AD. Over the following ten years in Japan, he made outstanding contributions to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Japan and fostering friendship between the two peoples. To commemorate this historic feat, this giant group sculpture was erected. The sculpture depicts the historical event of Jianzhen and his companions landing after their shipwreck during the fifth voyage, showcasing their unyielding determination, confidence in conquering the vast ocean, and joy of surviving the ordeal.

Adult ticket: 130 RMB (includes an electronic audio guide).

Discount Policy

1. Children under 1.2 meters in height are admitted free of charge; children between 1.2–1.4 meters enjoy a half-price discount of 70 RMB.

2. Seniors aged 60–69 can enjoy a half-price discount of 70 RMB with valid ID; seniors aged 70 and above (inclusive) are admitted free of charge with valid ID.

3. Elementary, middle, and high school students (excluding adult education students) can enjoy a half-price discount of 70 RMB with a student ID.

4. Active-duty military personnel, retired military personnel, and disabled military personnel are admitted free of charge with valid ID.

5. People with disabilities are admitted free of charge with valid ID.
