Haikou Taihua Nunnery

Taihua Nunnery is a Buddhist temple located in Qiongshan District, Haikou. Established over 300 years ago, the temple suffered significant setbacks during the Cultural Revolution, leaving only about 400 square meters of space today. In the sole remaining main hall, due to height restrictions, the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha lacks a lotus pedestal and is crowded together with the statues of Skanda, Guanyin, and Ksitigarbha. Additionally, the statues of Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha), Shakyamuni, and Maitreya are still squeezed onto the floor, a situation that deeply saddens devotees. The monastics here are diligent in practice and uphold upright conduct, which is rare in today's society. This has attracted countless followers and earned the nunnery recognition from the government as a “Five-Star Religious Activity Site.”

Since the initial proposal in the early 2000s, it took five years of effort. With strong support from the Haikou Municipal Government, a new site for Taihua Nunnery was finally selected near Shangxian Village on the left side of Linggui Highway in Meilan District, covering nearly twelve acres. It then took another five years, overcoming many challenges, to build neat dormitories with red pillars and corridors, as well as the magnificent Mahavira Hall with carved beams and painted rafters, rising from what was once barren land. Every brick and tile, every corner, embodies the heartfelt dedication of the nunnery’s monastics and lay practitioners, and is a concentrated manifestation of the power of the Triple Gem. Today, in the bright and spacious chanting hall, hundreds of devotees can recite the Buddha’s name and practice together in ease and harmony. During grand festivals, the site is filled with the joy of Dharma. The Heavenly King Hall and Scripture Depository will also be completed in the future. All of this will fulfill the beautiful vision of Taihua Nunnery’s relocation and reconstruction, and its pursuit of liberation.
