To explore Dongzhai Port Mangrove Nature Reserve, taking a boat tour is a must—only then can you fully appreciate the beauty of the mangroves. During high tide, almost the entire mangrove is submerged underwater except for the tree crowns, and they gradually emerge during low tide. Cruising along the waterways, you’ll find the mangroves partially submerged.

Mangrove trees are incredibly resilient plants that thrive in saline water—conditions that would kill most other vegetation. They possess remarkable vitality. While boating through the mangroves, if you’re lucky, you might spot various bird species, especially during autumn and winter when the area becomes a paradise for migratory birds.

The boat tour lasts about 20 minutes, ending at Wild Pineapple Island. The island is small and can be explored in roughly 20 minutes. There’s a sightseeing path winding through the tangled, dense forest, resembling a pristine jungle. It’s a great spot for photos or simply to enjoy the sound of the sea—offering a unique experience.

As it’s far from the city center, there are very few visitors here, making it a peaceful place perfect for relaxation and connecting with nature. Around the scenic area, local villagers sell salted duck eggs and seafood that are both delicious and affordable.

Tourist Shuttle

Take Tourist Shuttle Line 4 to 【Dongzhai Port Mangrove】, about 80 minutes in total, with a ticket fare of 14 RMB.

Minibus

Take a minibus from 【Haikou South Station】 to 【Yanfeng】, then hop on a motorcycle taxi from 【Yanfeng】 to the scenic area.

Tips

1. When taking the tourist shuttle to the scenic area, it’s recommended to buy a one-way ticket only—otherwise, you might not have enough time to explore.

2. After arriving at the final stop, do not buy tickets at the ticket booth. It’s better to walk back to the main road and continue about 500 meters in the direction the bus was heading. You’ll then see the buildings and signs of the mangrove reserve. There’s a well-built boardwalk leading into the mangroves for exploration, and it’s free of charge.

3. A boat tour is essential for visiting the mangroves, but prices and durations vary greatly between operators. Take some time to walk around the dock, ask around, and compare options before making your choice—don’t get talked into a ride impulsively. If traveling with a group, a 130 RMB boat that accommodates six people and includes a stop at Pineapple Island is recommended.
