The predecessor of Hainan Qiong Opera Theatre was the Guangdong Qiong Opera Theatre, established in 1959. It was renamed to its current name in 1988 after Hainan became a province. The theatre brings together renowned Qiong opera artists and integrates leading figures in the art form. It boasts legendary artists acclaimed across Hainan Island such as Zheng Changhe, Han Wenhua, Wang Fengmei, Wang Huangwen, Lin Daoxiu, Chen Hua, Hongmei, and Wang Yingrong, as well as a group of outstanding mid-career and young performing talents who hold their own in the arts, along with playwrights, directors, musicians, stage designers, and theoretical researchers.

The theatre is known as the “Highest Institution of Qiong Opera Art.” Since its establishment, the theatre has excavated and restored 210 traditional plays including “Searching the Academy,” “Zhang Wenxiu,” “Red Leaves Inscribed with Poetry,” and “Selling Rouge,” as well as adapted and transplanted 210 classic operas such as “The Butterfly Lovers,” “Lady Qin Xianglian,” “Chuncao Breaking into the Hall,” “Empress Hanwen,” and “Tale of the Two Butterflies.” It has also created and adapted 216 modern drama works such as “The Red Detachment of Women,” “Golden Chrysanthemum,” “Hongshu Bay,” and “Chaoyang Gully,” and composed 17 new historical and classical dramas such as “Hai Rui Returns to Court,” “The Story of Qingmei,” “Meeting of the Twin Stars,” and “Su Dongpo in Hainan.” Among them, the traditional play “Red Leaves Inscribed with Poetry” was revised and polished by Mr. Tian Han in 1962 and later made into a film released nationwide and across Southeast Asia.

The newly created historical drama “The Story of Qingmei” was performed at the Second China Art Festival. The opera TV drama “Dongpo Advises on Study,” after its broadcast, won the Third Prize and Organization Award at the 1997 China TV Opera Exhibition, as well as the Third Prize at the National Flying Apsaras Awards. The theatre has visited Beijing four times to perform plays such as “Zhang Wenxiu,” “The Dog with the Golden Hairpin,” “Selling Rouge,” “The Red Detachment of Women: Changqing Shows the Way,” “Red Leaves Inscribed with Poetry,” and “The Story of Qingmei,” receiving cordial receptions from national leaders and high praise from notable figures in the literary and art circles such as Zhou Yang, Tian Han, Ouyang Yuqian, Zhang Geng, and A Jia. The theatre has also toured Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, performing nearly 50 plays of various sizes—including “Searching the Academy,” “The Crow Playing with the Phoenix,” “Princess of a Hundred Flowers,” “Tale of the Two Butterflies,” and “The Story of Qingmei”—for overseas Chinese communities. These performances have made positive contributions to spreading the sounds of Hainan, connecting the emotions of the diaspora, and promoting cultural exchanges between China and other countries.
