Rǔdòng Yán
Rǔdòng Yán is located at the foot of Lóngpán Mountain, about 6 kilometers southwest of the county town. Since the Tang Dynasty, it has been a popular tourist destination, renowned as the “Finest Scenic Wonder in Southern China” and the “Number One Cave in Southern Hunan.” The spacious areas inside the cave can accommodate a thousand people. The cave features multiple chambers—upper, middle, and lower—and was so remarkable that Li Bangyan, Left Prime Minister and Minister of War during the Song Dynasty, wrote an essay titled “Record of the Three Caves.” The great Southern Song poet Zhang Xiaoxiang inscribed the four large characters “Shàngqīng Sān Dòng” (Upper Pure Three Caves). The cave is adorned with a stunning variety of stalactites, and its springs are clear and sweet. The interior remains warm in winter and cool in summer, while the exterior is shaded by lush green trees, making it an ideal spot for seeking tranquility and escaping the heat.
