Former Residence of Liu Yongfu

In the 12th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1886), after returning to China, Liu Yongfu took the opportunity of visiting his hometown and paying respects at ancestral graves to select a site and choose an auspicious date to build a residence in his native village of Dapo, Naliang (on the China-Vietnam border). After more than a year of construction, the residence was completed in the winter of the 14th year of Guangxu (1888).

The house covers a land area of approximately 659.75 square meters, with a built-up area of 602.86 square meters. It faces southwest and is situated to the northeast. The building is 32.5 meters wide and 20.3 meters deep, with a two-story brick-and-tile structure. It consists of twelve rooms, divided into upper and lower sections, with a central hall between the two levels. On the central beam of the hall, eight large characters in regular script are carved on either side: “Whole Family Celebrations” (全家吉庆) and “A Hall Full of Gold and Jade” (金玉满堂). Between the upper and lower sections is a central courtyard, with attached rooms on both sides of the courtyard.

In November of the same year, Liu Yongfu returned to Qinzhou, purchased an old residence on Bankuai Street belonging to the Mo family, and began preparations to build his retirement home, “Sānxuān Táng” (Hall of Three Declarations). He decided to settle in Qinzhou, using the house in Naliang as a temporary residence for visits back home and ancestral worship. In the spring of the 22nd year of Guangxu (1897), after returning to Naliang for a visit and temporary stay, Liu Yongfu went back to Qinzhou (his mother, Madam Chen, who held the title of Second-Rank Lady, was buried on Hulong Ridge in Lou Village, Naliang Town). In the 17th year of Guangxu (1891), he constructed a residence in Qinzhou, naming it “Sānxuān Táng” in commemoration of his glorious history of aiding Vietnam in resisting French aggression.

The Former Residence of Liu Yongfu in Naliang is now a county-level (formerly Fangcheng Autonomous County) cultural relics protection unit.

Liu Yongfu (1837–1917), originally named Yè and also known as Yì, with the courtesy name Yuanting, was from Xiaofeng Township, Gussen Cave, Fangcheng, Guangdong (now part of Guangxi). In the 25th year of the Daoguang reign (1845), he moved with his parents to Shangsi Direct-Controlled Prefecture, Guangxi (now Shangsi County), where he worked in farming. In the 2nd year of the Xianfeng reign (1852), he worked as a boatman on the Zujiang River route and, in his spare time, learned martial arts from his father and uncles. Soon after, both of his parents passed away, and he made a living by chopping wood and fishing. In the 7th year of Xianfeng (around 1857), together with six fellow villagers including Deng Afu, he joined the peasant uprising army of the Tiandihui in Guangxi and was active in Guidong (now Jingxi). In the 3rd year of the Tongzhi reign (1864), the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom... Liu Yongfu – More Details ++
