Wuxiang Square

Wuxiang Square is located on Jinhu Road in the Langdong New District of Nanning. It is the first modern commercial composite square in the capital city of Nanning that focuses on ecological leisure and integrates an above-ground plaza with an underground shopping mall. Wuxiang Square is divided into two parts: the North Square features main structures such as the Wuxiang Spring Sculpture, a flying saucer-shaped structure, and fountains. The South Square has a granite-paved ground, with main structures including a rotating water pool and a cascading frame structure. As an important area and a “highlight” of Nanning’s urban landscape, Wuxiang Square enjoys considerable attention.

Although “young and beautiful,” Wuxiang Square holds significant symbolic meaning due to its location in a key urban area. Construction of the surface plaza of Wuxiang Square began on August 23, 2004, and it was completed and opened to the public on October 26, 2004. From a high vantage point, the surface landscape project of Wuxiang Square is divided into northern and southern sections along Minzu Avenue as the central axis. Structures such as the Wuxiang Spring Sculpture, the flying saucer-shaped structure, the musical fountain, the rotating water pool, the cascading frame structure, and the bronze drum ground carvings are highly distinctive. The total land area of the square is 77,919 square meters (approximately 116.88 mu), of which the landscape plaza area covers 58,913 square meters (approximately 88.36 mu). It is currently the largest large-scale, leisure-and-entertainment-integrated, garden-style public open square in Nanning.

Nanning has long been known as the “City of Elephants,” with the most famous legend being that of Wuxiang Ridge. The design inspiration for the Wuxiang Sculpture in the square comes from this legend. It is said that during the Warring States period, in order to control the flooding in the south, Emperor Qin Shi Huang drove five treasured elephants from the Lingnan region to block the mountain torrents and ensure everlasting peace. When the five elephants reached near Nanning, they stopped and refused to go further. Emperor Qin Shi Huang tried to drive them on by patting their backs, but his hand met nothing but air — which enraged him. Upon waking, he realized it had all been a dream. Half-believing the dream, he sent people to investigate the south, and indeed, five mountain peaks resembling elephants appeared. Since then, the flooding problems in the Nanning area have lessened, and Wuxiang Ridge has become a symbol of protection and good fortune for the city.

Located in the northern part of Wuxiang Square, the Diwang International Business Center stands at the core of the Langdong CBD, occupying a prime “dragon vein” site. It is the only international Grade-A 5A pure office building in Nanning, with 58 floors. The top houses a high-end business helicopter pad and the Diwang Cloud Top Observation Deck. The building reaches a height of 218 meters (with a total architectural height of 276 meters), making it the tallest building in Nanning’s 1,680-year history.
