Former Residence of Cheng Siyuan
Mr. Cheng Siyuan’s former home is situated in Liang’an Village, Da Cheng Village Committee, Daqiao Town, Binyang County. It is a traditional two-courtyard corridor-style house typical of rural Binyang architecture, covering about 280 square meters. Constructed in the late Qing Dynasty, Mr. Cheng resided here from his childhood through his youth for 18 years. From May 1994 to early 1995, with the attention and support of Party committees, governments, and various sectors of society at all levels, the former residence was largely restored to its original appearance. A selection of collected photos, writings, materials, and objects were displayed inside for public viewing.
Mr. Cheng Siyuan was a renowned patriotic democrat in China and a prominent figure in the history of cross-strait relations between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. Well-known across the nation and especially familiar to the people of Guangxi, he experienced the rise and fall of eras, witnessed the founding, development, and glory of the People’s Republic of China, and maintained integrity, patriotism, and concern for his hometown despite holding high office throughout his life. His former residence is situated on the “tiger’s back” of a geomantically auspicious “tiger-shaped land.” To its front right lies the Yanglu Spring, which has provided drinking water for over 4,000 residents of nine natural villages in Da Cheng for generations. This spring shares the same underground river system as the Yingzhai Spring on the Daqiao River. The water is crystal clear, and despite enduring numerous severe droughts over the centuries, the spring has never dried up. In addition to meeting drinking needs, the spring water also overflows year-round to irrigate nearby rice fields — a true natural wonder. Walking 100 meters southeast from Yanglu Spring leads to the ancestral tomb of Cheng Siyuan. The site is surrounded by terraced rice paddies, with only the tomb slightly elevated. Ancient lore claims this location embodies the “flying phoenix drinking water” formation.
Cheng Siyuan (1908–2005), a native of Binyang, Guangxi, was a political activist. He earned a postgraduate degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Rome. In his youth, he left literary pursuits for a military career and gradually became a core figure within the Guangxi clique. He skillfully navigated relationships between Chiang Kai-shek and Li Zongren, participating in major historical events such as anti-Chiang campaigns, supporting Li Zongren’s vice-presidential campaign, forcing Chiang’s resignation, and facilitating peace talks with the Communist Party. Between April 1956 and June 1965, Li Zongren sent Cheng Siyuan to Beijing five times to meet with Premier Zhou Enlai. Cheng made two trips to Europe to serve as an intermediary, helping Li… [More details about Cheng Siyuan++]
