The Cai Family Ancient Residence Complex, located in the center of Cai Village, Gula Town, Binyang County, has an uncertain founding date. The oldest structures were destroyed in warfare in the ninth year of the Xianfeng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1859), and the oldest surviving buildings were rebuilt by Cai Lingxiao, a successful candidate in the imperial examinations of the Qing Dynasty, after that year.

The Cai Family Residences are divided into two parts—“Old Houses” and “New Houses”—comprising three separate complexes. All three building groups feature three-courtyard-style structures made of blue bricks and tiles, covering a total area of over 5,000 square meters. The main hall is the tallest, with the second and third halls gradually decreasing in height, giving the Cai Family Residences the grandeur of a traditional estate. The “New Houses” section especially showcases strict symmetrical design, further highlighting the solemnity and majesty of the buildings. The courtyards are paved with large bluestones or blue bricks, with a hierarchical distinction between main and secondary pathways. The roofs are adorned with carved beams and painted rafters, while doors and windows are decorated with seal script patterns such as “Fu (Fortune), Lu (Prosperity), and Shou (Longevity).” The front gates also feature landscape paintings and seal script calligraphy. The entire complex is rich in artistic detail, reflecting profound cultural heritage and offering high tourism and aesthetic value.
