Mengshan West Fort Park

Mengshan West Fort Park is a cultural tourism attraction.

Mengshan County's West Fort Park is situated on Tuanguan Ridge, half a li west of Mengshan County town. It was originally the site of the West Fort commanded by Xiao Chaogui, the Western King and leader of the Taiping Rebellion forces. The park was built in 2002 and covers an area of 71.36 acres. At the center of the hilltop is a martyrs' cemetery, while two semi-circular walls are built against the northern hillside, guarding two large cannons. The park features stele corridors on both the eastern and western sides, inscribed with the names of notable figures from Mengshan County’s history and accounts of impactful events. The ridge is dotted with elegant pavilions, lush green lawns, and blooming flowers and trees. From the hilltop, the entire Mengshan County town can be viewed.

The stele corridors on the western side of Mengshan West Fort Park are inscribed with the names of historical figures from the county and significant events that have had a lasting impact. Tuanguan Ridge is adorned with quaint pavilions, lush green lawns, and slopes covered in flowers and trees. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Cultural Park includes the ancient magnolia tree, which witnessed Hong Xiuquan issuing edicts, the dried-up well where local officials were executed, the Wu Temple where the Taiping kings and generals discussed military strategies, the ancient walls of Yong’an Prefecture, as well as recently built stele corridors, a bronze statue of Hong Xiuquan, and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Relics Exhibition Hall. The ongoing renovation and expansion project of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Cultural Park (including the restoration of the western and northern walls, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Memorial Hall, and relief stele corridors) is set to open to visitors on May 1, 2002. The Longevity Wind and Rain Bridge has been restored and is now open to traffic. The Meijiang River dam has been put into use, raising the water level of the Meijiang River, bringing a fresh new look to the river section within the county town. Other tourism projects currently under planning include the Yong’an Ancient Banyan Park, Aoshan Park, Meijiang Night, and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Ancient Battlefield. With the continuous improvement and development of these numerous attractions, a “One-Day Tour of Mengshan” will soon become a reality.
