Ancient Banyan at Zhoutou

The Ancient Banyan at Zhoutou is located at the northern entrance of Mengshan County. Three ancient banyan trees are interconnected, covering an area of over 800 square meters. Towering majestically, they resemble an enormous umbrella. Legend has it that they were planted during the Song Dynasty and have a history of a thousand years. The largest one has a trunk girth of several dozen arm-spans. These three ancient banyans, with their intertwined roots and branches, exude a grand and noble presence. Some roots are exposed above the ground, resembling coiled dragons; others hang downward like tassels and fringes, adding to the banyans' serene and picturesque charm. The tree trunks are thick and rugged, covered in moss that looks like a fuzzy green coat. The branches, however, are smoother and straighter—some lower horizontal limbs stretch out like beams over a meter wide. Despite having stood for a thousand years, the ancient banyans remain lush and leafy, their canopies a sea of green. To the south of the banyans, residents have built houses along the stream. The banyans, flowing water, and nearby homes together form a unique painting of a southern water town. Nearby once stood the Yuanmiao Taoist Temple, built during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli era but later destroyed in war. During the Qing Dynasty's Xianfeng era, the Taiping Army stationed here to resist Qing forces from the north and defend the county town, leaving behind a glorious page in revolutionary history. On hot summer days, resting under the banyan shade brings cool, refreshing breezes that soothe the heart and lift the spirit.
