Liang Yusheng Park

Liang Yusheng Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Liang Yusheng Park is located at the southeastern corner of Mengshan County, adjacent to National Highway 321, and is about 143 kilometers from Guilin City.

The original site of Liang Yusheng Park was the Aoshan Pagoda (also known as Wenbi Pagoda), named so because the pagoda stands atop a mountain that resembles a giant turtle. The main pagoda was first built in the 27th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1762), continued construction during the Jiaqing era, and was rebuilt in 1985. The pagoda has five stories and is hexagonal in shape, with each level featuring eaves. The top of the pagoda is covered with glazed tiles, and the spire is adorned with a pottery ornament in the shape of a lotus supporting a gourd. On either side of the pagoda’s entrance is a couplet written in February 1987 by Liang Yusheng (whose real name was Chen Wentong), a native of Mengshan County and a renowned Hong Kong-based wuxia novelist of the new school. The couplet reads: “Literary brilliance shines like the sun; reach the highest point to broaden your horizons and witness your hometown turning a new page; the power of the pen reaches the clouds; true talent naturally possesses vision, and may those who come after surpass their predecessors.” The inscriptions on the window lintels of each level, from bottom to top, still follow the original pagoda’s labels, respectively: “Aofeng Stands Alone in Beauty,” “Climbing the Clouds to Find the Path,” “Vital Energy Within,” “Light Piercing the Dipper and Ox,” and “Direct Ascent to the Toad Palace.” The eaves of each level are decorated with vibrant and colorful patterns.

At the foot of the small hill beneath the pagoda lies a serene ancient temple — Yong’an Temple — where the sounds of sutras echo and incense smoke rises continuously. When the sun sets and the evening glow bathes the area, with birds returning to their nests, the Aoshan Pagoda appears especially enchanting. In 2005, when Liang Yusheng returned to China, the People’s Government of Mengshan County invested over 7 million yuan to develop the small hill where the Aoshan Pagoda is located into Liang Yusheng Park.
