The Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion

The Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion is located by the Luo Pond east of the Temple to Lord Liu. It was said that Liu Zongyuan once planted yellow tangerine trees here, and his poem “Planting Tangerine Trees in the Northwest Corner of Liuzhou City” became widely known. Later generations built the “Tangerine Hall” to commemorate this event, but it was destroyed and rebuilt many times. The original site is untraceable. In the 19th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1754), it was rebuilt over the Luo Pond, and then the prefect of Liuzhou, Meng Duan, renamed it the “Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion,” symbolizing the lingering fragrance of the tangerines planted by Lord Liu.

Historically, the Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion underwent two major renovations. The current pavilion was rebuilt in 1978 in the style of the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. It has a hexagonal plan and a double-eaved, pavilion-style facade, supported by ten bright red pillars. It is open on all sides, with green tiles and red window frames, upturned roof ridges, delicate window lattices, and elegant floral decorations. Nestled among osmanthus bushes, it presents an elegant and distinctive charm.

In 1963, the famous writer Guo Moruo wrote a poem titled “The Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion” during his visit to Liuzhou: “More romantic are the figures of old, / Their horticultural feats surpass those of Lord Liu. / They’ve planted six hundred thousand fragrant tangerines— / For such scents, two thousand pavilions should glow!” Since ancient times, the Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion has been a popular gathering spot for locals to discuss poetry and literature. Even today, it remains lively, with residents often playing musical instruments, singing in choruses, and creating a unique scenic highlight in the park.

A poem by the Song Dynasty poet Tao Bui, “Only a blank stele remains in the painted hall,” indicates that the Tangerine Hall and genuine calligraphy stone engravings of Liu Zongyuan still existed at that time. Later, the original site fell into disrepair, and all cultural relics were lost. In the 19th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1754), the Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion was rebuilt over the Luo Pond, and later relocated beside the pond, with a commemorative stele erected. After several cycles of rise and decline, the present Tangerine Fragrance Pavilion was newly constructed in the style of the Qianlong era.

Liu Zongyuan, courtesy name Zihou, was a native of Hedong (present-day Yongji City, Shanxi Province) in the Tang Dynasty. He was born in the capital Chang’an in the eighth year of the Dali era during the reign of Emperor Daizong (773) and died in exile in Liuzhou in the fourteenth year of the Yuanhe era during the reign of Emperor Xianzong (819). A renowned literary figure and thinker, he lived less than 50 years. Because he was from Hedong and served as the Prefect of Liuzhou until his death, he is referred to as Liu Hedong or Liu Liuzhou.

The Liu family, along with the Xue and Pei families, were known as the “Three Prominent Clans of Hedong.” From Liu Zongyuan’s eighth-generation to sixth-generation ancestors, all held high official positions in the imperial court, and his fifth-generation ancestor once served as Prefect of four commanderies. After the establishment of the Tang Dynasty, the Liu family had close ties with the Li imperial clan... More details about Liu Zongyuan ++
