Cityplaza Transforms into Night Shanghai, Reviving the Festive Vibes of a Prosperous New Year

Hong Kong has just wrapped up its New Year’s celebrations, and the lively atmosphere will continue into the traditional Lunar New Year, with malls and shopping centers gearing up to welcome the arrival of the Year of the Tiger. From January 21 to February 21, Cityplaza, the largest shopping mall on Hong Kong Island, will present “Songs and Splendor: Night Shanghai,” taking customers back in time to the bustling streets of old Shanghai during the Lunar New Year. Traveling 80 years back in time, visitors can experience a dazzling and luxurious festive ambiance.

During the New Year period, Cityplaza will host a variety of nostalgic golden oldies performances. Ji Xiaolan, known as the “Shanghai Teresa Teng,” will lead the critically acclaimed Shanghai Hailin Jazz Band in live performances, recreating the vibrant nightlife of old Shanghai. The mall has also prepared attractive shopping rewards, including a grand Lunar New Year lucky draw with prizes worth over HK$450,000, ensuring that customers go home laden with gifts to welcome the new year.

Starting January 21, the central bridge on the second floor, as well as the first floor and basement level of Cityplaza, will be transformed into a classical street imbued with the charm of old Shanghai. Lined with nostalgic shops and entertainment venues featuring early Shanghai architectural styles, these include restaurants, barbershops, classic cinemas, photo studios, beauty and department stores, cheongsam and Western-style clothing boutiques, old-style banks, and glamorous dance halls. These Shanghai-style buildings are adorned with classic vintage furniture and ornaments, as well as festive items such as firecrackers and large red lanterns. Elegant women in chic cheongsams will stroll the classical street, and classic rickshaws will be available for customers to ride free of charge, offering a taste of the good old days.

The stage area in the central atrium on the second floor will be transformed into a magnificent 37-ton wide and 38-ton tall dance hall, hosting a series of dazzling performances. A dazzling giant crystal chandelier will shine brightly above the stage, while the walls feature windows inlaid with hundreds of colorful glass panes that emit a spectrum of light, complementing the chandelier in a display of luxury reminiscent of the glamorous nightlife of night Shanghai. Additionally, a 1947 vintage Mercedes-Benz sedan—one of the first produced globally after World War II—will be parked in front of the “Tung Lok Dance Hall” in the basement of Cityplaza during the event, further evoking the golden era of prosperity.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, Cityplaza is offering a range of shopping discounts and lucky draws. Customers who spend HK$1,500 or more between January 21 and February 16 can exchange their receipts for two packs of “Welcoming Spring and Blessings” red envelopes and one lucky draw coupon. Shoppers can also claim free Lunar New Year souvenirs, including Spring Festival couplets or photo portraits at the portrait photo studio, and purchase Shanghai-themed festive food at discounted prices. Prizes in the Lunar New Year lucky draw include a Toyota Noah luxury eight-seater car, a 3-tael solid gold “Shanghai Soup Dumpling” from Chow Sang Sang, HK$38,000 worth of Cityplaza shopping credits, as well as other shopping, banquet, and travel vouchers.
