Luo Pond
Luo Pond is situated within Liuzhou Park. Long considered one of the city's scenic highlights, it is located to the east of the Temple of Lord Liu. In 815 AD, Liu Zongyuan was banished and sent to Liuzhou to serve as Prefect. His time in office was short-lived; disillusioned politically and struggling with poverty and illness, he died in Liuzhou in 819 AD. Han Yu wrote in “Record of the Temple at Luo Pond in Liuzhou”: Three years after Liu Zongyuan’s death, he appeared in a dream to his former subordinate Ouyang Yi and said, “Bury me by Luo Pond.” This account, embellished by Han Yu, turned this wild body of water just north of Liuzhou into a renowned site that has been celebrated to this day.
“Luo Pond under Moonlight” was originally one of the Eight Ancient Scenic Spots of Liuzhou.
Zhong Luo of the Tang Dynasty
Wrote in his “Dingjian Qianlu”: “To the north of Dragon City lies the scenic Luo Pond,” indicating that Luo Pond was already famous as early as the Tang Dynasty. According to the Ming Dynasty’s Li Xihua in “Record of the Luo Pond Study House,” the ancient Luo Pond “spanned several li in area, with calm waters pooling in the inlet, level and reflective to the outside.” Back then, when the moon rose above Dongtai Mountain and cast its reflection on the pond’s surface, the scene was stark, ethereal, and serene. By the willows along the bank, gazing up or down at the bright moon above the water created an incomparably beautiful sight. When there was no moon, “by the tomb no Luo Pond moon is seen, only the whisper of withered grass remains” (Yan Xingbang, “Poem on Staying at Lord Liu’s Place”). When there was a moon, “a thousand-year-old temple shelters the moon at night, while a mountain city is locked in cold clouds” (Wang Chen, “Remembering Ancient Times in Liuzhou”). Hence arose the beautiful scenery known as “Luo Pond under Moonlight,” which became an entry in the Ciyuan dictionary. However, in the seventh year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1637 AD), the geographer Xu Xiake traveled a great distance to see the famed “Luo Pond under Moonlight,” only to find that “this view had long vanished and could no longer be seen.” Today, only a few acres of clear water remain for visitors to contemplate. There once was a stone bridge over Luo Pond called “New Moon Bridge,” but it has also disappeared without a trace.
