Jia Di Alley retains the classic charm of ancient Chaozhou residences, making it the best place to witness the traditional dwellings of Chaozhou in ancient times.

It was once home to the city’s elite officials, merchants, and prestigious families, encapsulating the essence of Chaozhou's ancient residential architecture.

The colorful ceramic inlays on the gable walls, along with the exquisite wood and stone carvings on the eaves and column capitals, showcase exceptional craftsmanship. The styles of the gable ridges vary according to the orientation and layout of the houses, classified into five types: “Metal (金), Wood (木), Water (水), Fire (火), and Earth (土).” The interior flooring of the homes uses locally traditional red square bricks, and the patterns laid out carry symbolic meanings. For example, a diagonal “人” (person) pattern in the hall symbolizes bustling human activity and prosperity; a staggered “丁” (nail) pattern in the bedroom suggests the birth of a boy; and a “田” (field) pattern in the corridor implies the family owns land.

The traditional residences within the “Yi Xing Jia Three Alleys Historical Block” house many ancient wells and old trees. There are currently 143 ancient wells, with nearly every residence having one—some of which are still in use. In Yi Jing Lane, an ancient well from the Song Dynasty known as “Yi Jing” remains at the eastern entrance, along with planted trees.
