Hanshan Normal University is a long-established and distinctive undergraduate teachers' college under Guangdong Province. It is located in Chaozhou City, a national historical and cultural city known as the “China Ceramics Capital.” The campus covers an area of 860,000 square meters, with a building area of 490,000 square meters.

The university traces its origins to the “Hui-Chao-Jia Teachers’ School,” established in the 29th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1903). Its roots go back even further to the “Hanshan Academy,” founded in the 5th year of Yuanyou during the Song Dynasty (1090 AD) by the people of Chaozhou to commemorate Han Yu, the great literary figure of the Tang Dynasty. It is among the first institutions in China and the very first in Guangdong dedicated to training teachers. In 1921, it was renamed the Provincial Second Teachers’ School; in 1935, the Provincial Hanshan Teachers’ School; in 1949, simply Hanshan Teachers’ School; in 1958, it was upgraded to a higher teachers’ college; and in 1993, it became an undergraduate normal university.

Over its more than one hundred years of educational history, the university has cultivated a fine tradition of “diligent teaching, dedicated learning, and being role models,” while highlighting the distinctive features of “emphasizing both humanities education and applied education, and balancing localization with internationalization.” It has supplied Guangdong and neighboring provinces with a large number of outstanding teachers and professionals in various fields. A number of distinguished alumni have emerged, including Zou Lu, the first president of Sun Yat-sen University; Chen Weishi, the second president of South China Normal University and a philosopher; Chen Fuli, an internationally renowned photography master; Chen Weinan, a patriotic industrialist based in Hong Kong; Lim Chin Wah, an industrialist from Malaysia; Prasit Watanapa, an entrepreneur from Thailand; and Chen Chichuan, a renowned calligraphy educator from Taiwan. The university has made significant contributions to the development of education in Guangdong and the local economic construction.

The university comprises 18 secondary colleges, including the College of Literature and Journalism, and offers 56 undergraduate programs covering eight disciplines: literature, history, law, education, science, engineering, management, and art, as well as all subjects in basic education. It has three national-level featured programs, 16 provincial-level ones, one national-level comprehensive reform pilot program, six provincial-level ones, two provincial-level talent cultivation model innovation experimental zones, three provincial-level key disciplines, one provincial-level collaborative education platform, and 14 provincial-level quality and excellent courses. The university enrolls students from 11 provinces (regions), as well as from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, with a total of over 17,500 full-time students. Its adult higher education programs offer more than 30 undergraduate and college-level majors, with over 21,000 current students. In recent years, it has also collaborated with institutions such as East China Normal University, Xiamen University, and Guangdong University of Technology to offer part-time master's degree programs.
