The Han River got its name over 1,300 years ago when Han Yu, the foremost of the “Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song,” was demoted here due to setbacks in his official career, and ended up contributing to the development of the area.

The Han River is the only major river in Guangdong that originates within the province and flows directly into the sea. Although it does not possess the grandeur of the Yellow River or the Yangtze River, which stretch across the vast land of China, nor the length of the Pearl River, which travels thousands of miles from distant snow-capped mountains and rushes into the South China Sea, it is the mother river of the people in eastern Guangdong.
