In the western suburbs of Chaozhou City lies West Lake nestled against Hulushan Mountain, where the waters and mountains complement each other to create exceptionally beautiful scenery. A visitor from out of town once exclaimed after touring the lake, “No such fine lake and mountain scenery exists in my hometown.” The words “Picturesque Lakes and Mountains” are inscribed on the mountain, a testament to the beauty of West Lake.

The Chaozhou West Lake Scenic Area is made up of Hulushan Mountain and West Lake. Since the Tang and Song dynasties and continuing to this day, it has been a local custom for Chaozhou residents to take tea and chat or share stories during their leisure time at the lake. The tale of “Fishing Rafts on West Lake” has been passed down through these storytelling sessions. In the past, there was an old man named Zhang who lived north of the city and made a living selling fish. Every afternoon, he would go to “Maiden’s Spring” to listen to interesting anecdotes.

Compared to Hangzhou’s West Lake, Chaozhou’s West Lake Park is more delicate and quaint. Here, the landscape of lakes and mountains is enhanced by pavilions and towers tucked among the scenery, along with numerous cultural relics. It's a wonderful place to stroll and relax.

West Lake Park can be considered a transitional spot between Chaozhou’s old town and its modern urban area. Upon visiting, you’ll first be drawn to its classic, traditional-style entrance gate. Inside the park is the Hanbi Building, which served as the headquarters for our army during the war period—now visitors can climb to the top for scenic views. You can also take a boat ride on the lake to enjoy the views along both shores. The cliff inscriptions on Hulushan Mountain are another treasured cultural feature of the site. The area also offers small recreational activities such as ball tossing and fishing.
