Xiazhai Watchtower

Xiazhai Watchtower is located in the southern part of Xiazhai Village, Xiazhai Village Committee, Kengkou Town, Guangning County, Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province. Built during the Republican era, it faces south and is constructed with a brick-and-wood structure. The building spans 15.62 meters in width and extends 10.38 meters in depth, covering an area of 162 square meters. It has two floors, features mud-brick walls that are 0.5 meters thick, and includes a blue-brick door frame with a sliding bolt door; each floor has four rooms and one hall, with wooden flooring and staircases inside. Each level also features windows and gun ports in the walls. Originally a three-story structure, in 1948, it was captured by the forces of Chen Sheng and Ma Ben from the Guangdong-Guangxi-Hunan Border Column, who dismantled the third floor. The discovery of this watchtower provides valuable physical evidence for understanding the region’s humanistic history during the Republican era and the revolutionary struggle history of Guangning County.

Kengkou Town: Located in the northwest of Guangning County along the middle reaches of the Gushui River, Kengkou Town borders Luogang Town to the east, is adjacent to Nanjie and Gushui Towns to the south, neighbors A’zi and Gansa Towns of Huaiji County to the west, and connects to Chikeng Town to the north. Its coordinates are 112°20′ east longitude and 23°42′ north latitude. The town stretches 15 kilometers from east to west and 21 kilometers from north to south, with the town government situated 21 kilometers from the county seat.
