Shangqingwan Ancient Village is located to the northwest of Gaoyao District, nestled by water and backed by mountains. The area is dotted with red-walled, black-tiled ancient dwellings scattered across the landscape in a charming, well-spaced layout that exudes tranquility and leisure. Here you’ll find the Catholic Church, a building that beautifully blends Chinese and Western architectural styles with a strong exotic flair, as well as simple yet evocative sights such as grey-brick old houses, bluestone alleys, a historic fishing village ferry, and ancient banyan trees with lush bamboo groves. The beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural heritage of Shangqingwan attract countless visitors from near and far. In recent years, it has become a favorite spot for photography, painting, and travel enthusiasts. The CCTV program “Traveling Through China” once came here to film a special feature. Kengwei Ancient Village Kengwei, a picturesque ancient village known for its unspoiled local customs, gained fame due to its connection with Li Xiongcai, a master painter of the Lingnan School of Painting. Stepping into this historic village, you’ll be captivated by its classic Lingnan-style architecture, unique natural scenery, and rich cultural atmosphere—truly a feast for the eyes and a marvel to behold. It is recognized as one of Guangdong’s Top Ten Distinctive Ancient Villages, a Classic Lingnan Rural Destination in Guangdong Province, and a Historical and Cultural Tourism Site dedicated to famous personalities. The scenic area features exhibits such as the former residence of Li Xiongcai, the Langguan Mansion, the Yihetang Study, as well as displays representing Qing Dynasty households, Republican-era homes, and production brigade offices.
