Judge Henry Lo selected the work of The Travel Lovers as the winning entry for the January travel photography “Appreciation.” Below is the Henry Lo review:
To capture a Sky Mirror with the Milky Way visible, specific seasonal conditions are required. First, it must be during the Southern Hemisphere’s Milky Way season, which is the local summer. However, the mirror effect only appears during or after the rainy season (November to February), but it’s impossible to see the Milky Way when it’s raining. I estimate this photo was taken between March and May. The photographer clearly possesses highly skilled techniques in capturing starry skies, and the silhouette of the person aligns perfectly with the Milky Way—a thoughtful composition. Capturing the dawn light also adds another layer to the image. Since the ground of the Sky Mirror is covered with salty water, setting up the tripod requires great care, and I believe the photographer managed to solve this issue on site. This photo is already exceptionally well done—if I may offer one suggestion, I’d recommend the two subjects stand a bit farther apart to incorporate the reflection of their silhouettes into the composition, making full use of the Sky Mirror effect.
