One of the most stunning spots to capture a mirror-like sky,Bolivia’sSalar de Uyuniis definitely among them. Located at an altitude of 3,700 meters in the mountains ofBolivia, it is also the world’s largest salt flat, spanning over 10,000 square kilometers (about 9.5 times the size of Hong Kong). Judge Henry Lo selected the work of The Travel Lovers as the winning entry for the January Monthly Travel Photography “Award.” Below is the Henry Lo review:
To capture a mirror-like sky with the Milky Way, specific seasonal conditions are required. First, it must be during the Southern Hemisphere’s Milky Way visibility period, which is during the local summer months. However, the mirror effect only appears during or after the rainy season (November to February), although you can’t see the Milky Way when it’s raining. I estimate this photo was taken between March and May. The photographer clearly has highly skilled techniques in astrophotography. The silhouetted human figure and the Milky Way align perfectly—a thoughtful composition. Capturing the dawn light also adds another layer to the image. Since the surface of the Salar de Uyuni is covered in salty water, setting up the tripod requires high precision, which the photographer must have managed on-site. This photo is already exceptional. If I were to offer one suggestion, it would be for the two subjects to stand a bit farther apart, allowing their silhouettes' reflections to be included in the composition and making full use of the mirror effect of the salt flat.
