Wenjiashan Burial Complex

A group of Shang Dynasty tombs. It is located on Wenjiashan in Sunwu Village, Rongjiawan Town, Yueyang County. From November 1994 to April 1995, 31 tombs were excavated here as an emergency rescue operation. The tombs are distributed on the summit of Wenjiashan and the fourth-century red clay with a net-like pattern on the eastern, southern, and northern slopes, arranged in an orderly fashion. All are earthen pit tombs, including circular, rounded rectangle, oval, and crescent shapes, predominantly circular and rounded rectangles. Deep and large pits generally contain few burial objects, though a small number have grouped artifacts distributed around the periphery of the tomb bottom. Shallow and small pits tend to have richer grave goods. The burial objects are mainly pottery, with very few stone tools and no bronze ware. The pottery is primarily sandy brown and sandy red pottery, followed by sandy gray and earthenware gray pottery, along with a certain number of stamped hard pottery. Decorations include cord marks and incised patterns. Vessel types include cauldrons, tripods, li tripods, jars, large-mouthed vats, dou stems, and ring-footed plates, with tripods, cauldrons, and li tripods being the most common. Earlier tombs mainly contained cauldrons and tubes, while later ones were dominated by cauldrons and tripods. This site represents the first discovery of a Shang Dynasty burial complex in Hunan, dating to the late Shang period. It holds significant importance for studying the relationship and mutual integration between Shang culture and the local indigenous culture.

Rongjiawan Town: Rongjiawan Town is located in the western part of the county, 23.6 kilometers from downtown Yueyang. The town borders Xinjiang River to the north, facing Matang Town and Xinkai Town; it connects to Xinqiang Town to the east, Huangshajie Town to the south, and Lujiao Town to the west.
