Hunan Institute of Science and Technology is situated in Yueyang, a national historical and cultural city. Facing the iconic Yueyang Tower and neighboring the vast Dongting Lake, it is a provincially administered, full-time regular higher education institution primarily focused on science and engineering, while also maintaining coordinated development across a wide range of disciplines including science, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management, law, education, and art. Approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree-granting institution, it is also among the first group of applied undergraduate colleges selected for the National Project on the Integration of Industry and Education. The institute has been included in the “13th Five-Year Plan” of the People’s Government of Hunan Province for upgrading to a university, and has been approved as a planned doctoral degree-granting institution for the period of 2020–2023. Blessed with a beautiful natural environment and profound cultural heritage, it is honored as “the most beautiful university in Hunan.”

The university boasts a long history of education, tracing back to the founding of Lakeside University in 1910. Through years of evolution, in 1999, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Yueyang Teachers College, Yueyang University, and Yueyang Education College merged to form Yueyang Normal University. In 2003, it was renamed Hunan Institute of Science and Technology. Nestled against hills and by the lake, the campus spans over 2,100 acres and features a stunning 4-kilometer lakeside shoreline. The total floor space of its buildings is nearly 700,000 square meters, with fixed assets valued at 1.4 billion yuan and teaching and research equipment worth nearly 200 million yuan. The university houses a library that is among the best in the province in terms of facilities and environment, with a collection of over 2.92 million volumes (including 1.5 million e-books). Its “smart campus” development leads the region, with nearly full coverage of free campus Wi-Fi. Air conditioning is installed in student dormitories, the library, and some teaching venues, ensuring comprehensive and well-equipped facilities for teaching, research, and daily life.

The university comprises 16 teaching colleges and one independent college—Nanhu College. It offers 54 bachelor's degree programs, 8 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 8 master's professional degree authorization points. There are 5 provincially key disciplines under construction. The university enrolls over 23,000 full-time students, including undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students (including those at the independent college).

The university has a well-structured, high-caliber, and multi-tiered faculty. It currently employs 1,273 staff members, including 139 professors, 226 PhDs, 180 master's supervisors, and 23 foreign teachers. Among them are more than 150 high-level professionals such as scholars appointed under the national “Thousand Talents Plan,” experts enjoying the State Council Special Allowance, candidates selected for the Ministry of Education’s “New Century Excellent Talents Support Program,” recipients of the “Friendship Award,” and provincial-level distinguished teaching faculty. The university has also engaged nearly 100 renowned scholars and experts from both China and abroad—including world-renowned pianist Mikhail Arkadiev—as full-time or part-time professors.
