The Former Site of the Pingjiang County Committee of the CPC (Former Residence of Martyr Mao Jianqing) was originally built in 1919. The original structure was a typical northern-style compound complex, covering an area of 5,000 m². Due to the flood in 1926 and destruction by the reactionary Kuomintang forces in 1932, only the rear seven rooms and three auxiliary rooms remain. With the high attention of the Pingjiang County Committee and County Government, and strong support from relevant provincial and municipal departments, the site was listed as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units in 2013. Currently, the protection planning project has been approved by the National Cultural Heritage Administration, and the site is actively applying to be included in the National Patriotic Education Base and the National Red Tourism Attractions Directory.

Mao Jianqing was an early revolutionary of our Party. In 1913, he studied in Japan at Tokyo Imperial University. After graduating and returning to China, he joined the Communist Party of China under the influence of Mao Zedong and He Shuheng. In 1924, he served as a political instructor at the Whampoa Military Academy. In 1927, he was a member of the Hunan Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Pingjiang County Committee, organizing the Pingjiang Workers' and Peasants' Volunteer Army to participate in the Autumn Harvest Uprising led by Mao Zedong. To deceive the enemy, he set up the County Committee and General Headquarters in his own home, secretly liaising and organizing and commanding the historically significant "March City Assault" battle involving 200,000 peasant soldiers, which was recorded in the annals of Hunan’s revolutionary history. In 1928, Mao Jianqing attended the Sixth Congress of the Communist Party of China, where he was elected Secretary of the Hunan Delegation and a member of the Congress Presidium. In 1931, he went to work in the Western Hunan-Hubei Soviet Area, serving as editor-in-chief of the Red Flag Daily. He sacrificed his life in Honghu the following autumn at the age of 41.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) announced the Former Site of the Pingjiang County Committee of the CPC (Former Residence of Martyr Mao Jianqing) as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
