Tianjin Cultural Center
Starting from May 19, 2012, the much-anticipated various cultural venues of the Tianjin Cultural Center were opened to the public on a trial basis. The Tianjin Museum, Tianjin Art Museum, and the Tianjin Library Cultural Center branch welcomed visitors from all walks of life free of charge.
The Tianjin Cultural Center is a people's project aimed at promoting the great development and prosperity of Tianjin’s culture for the benefit of future generations. It is also the largest public cultural facility construction project in Tianjin's history. The project covers a total area of 90 hectares and includes eight sub-projects: a newly built museum, art museum, library, grand theater, Sunshine Park, Civic Plaza, underground transportation hub, infrastructure, and supporting landscape works. The total construction area is approximately 1 million square meters, of which the four major cultural venues account for 310,000 square meters. The project commenced in September 2009 and, after more than two years of hard work, was completed as a first-class, century-quality project, delivering a satisfactory result to the public and history.
The Tianjin Museum has a construction area of 57,000 square meters, with five floors above ground and one below, and an exhibition area of 14,000 square meters. It includes galleries for ancient history, treasures, modern history, temporary exhibitions, as well as 13 specialized exhibition halls for jade artifacts, calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, and more. The museum houses a collection of 200,000 cultural relics, 200,000 books and documents, and nearly 1,000 national first-class relics. The new museum will display nearly 5,000 cultural relics and serves as a venue for the collection and exhibition of Tianjin’s cultural relics, as well as a city landmark for cultural dissemination, exchange, and sharing.
The Tianjin Art Museum has a construction area of 32,000 square meters, with four floors above ground and one below, and a total exhibition area of 10,000 square meters. It is Tianjin’s first comprehensive fine arts museum dedicated to collecting, researching, promoting, and displaying works by modern and contemporary artists. It includes sections for contemporary art, modern plastic arts, multi-functional art galleries, and Chinese art.
The Tianjin Library Cultural Center branch has a construction area of 57,000 square meters, with five floors above ground and one below. Its main functions include book lending, digital reading, archival storage, academic exchanges, social education, as well as the preservation and restoration of ancient texts. It is a large-scale comprehensive public library that integrates the collection, organization, storage, research, and service of documentary information resources. The branch holds a collection of 6 million books and offers round-the-clock, fully free, 24-hour self-service borrowing and returning services, making it a paradise of knowledge and a place for lifelong learning.
The Tianjin Grand Theater has a construction area of 105,000 square meters, with five floors above ground and three below. Its design concept is “the city’s stage,” featuring a simple, grand, harmonious, and rounded architectural form. The theater consists of an opera house, a concert hall, and a small theater, with a total of 3,200 seats. It hosts over 300 high-level domestic and international cultural performances each year, serving as a hall for citizens to enjoy refined art.
The Tianjin Cultural Center integrates public cultural venues, urban parks, leisure centers for residents, and spaces for youth activities. It has become the center for showcasing high-end art and promoting cultural arts in Tianjin, as well as a beautiful urban living room and a harmonious recreational park for citizens. It plays an important role in enhancing the city’s cultural soft power, enriching the spiritual and cultural lives of the public, and improving cultural literacy.
