Tianjin Science and Technology Museum
The Tianjin Science and Technology Museum is a national AAA-level tourist attraction, a science education base, and a patriotic education base.
The Tianjin Science and Technology Museum is located on Longchang Road in Hexi District, within the Cultural Center. Whether viewed from above or admired from afar, the museum’s exterior resembles a bridge—symbolizing that science and technology serve as a bridge connecting the present and the future. The 3/4 spherical planetarium at the “center of the bridge” resembles a rising sun about to burst forth. The museum covers an area of nearly 20,000 square meters. It consists of exhibition halls, a multi-functional planetarium, lecture halls, training classrooms, and more, making it a modern comprehensive exhibition venue.
Basic Information
The Tianjin Science and Technology Museum covers an area of 20,000 square meters, with a building area of 18,000 square meters. Construction began in late 1992, and it officially opened to the public on January 1, 1995. The late internationally renowned mathematician Professor Shiing-Shen Chern once served as the museum’s honorary director.
Since its opening, the museum has received over 5 million visitors, including 35 Party and state leaders and more than 500 provincial- and ministerial-level officials. It has been designated by relevant national ministries and commissions as a “National Science Education Base,” a “National Youth Science and Technology Education Base,” and a “National Patriotic Education Base for Primary and Secondary Schools.” It has also been awarded multiple honors, such as “National Advanced Collective in Science Popularization Work” and “National Advanced Unit in Spiritual Civilization Construction.”
Today, the Tianjin Science and Technology Museum has become a beloved cultural and leisure destination for local residents and a major tourist attraction on the shores of the Bohai Sea. It plays a significant role in Tianjin’s spiritual civilization development and in improving the scientific and cultural literacy of the public.
Exhibition Hall Introduction
The exhibition hall is the main part of the museum, with a construction area of 10,000 square meters and a large-space structure. The hall is divided into upper and lower levels, featuring 13 exhibition areas across different disciplines and technical fields, with over 300 exhibits (sets). The layout of the exhibition hall is grand and imposing, while each zone has its own unique features, giving visitors the feeling of entering a temple of science. Among them, the “Mathematics Hall,” completed in August 2002 and personally designed by Professor Shiing-Shen Chern, covers an area of 1,100 square meters and consists of six parts: the lobby, the corridor of mathematical history, Chinese and foreign mathematicians, classical mathematics, modern mathematics, and computers and their applications. It has attracted attention from mathematicians both at home and abroad. Areas such as the “Science and Technology Celebrities Garden” and the “Hands-On, Minds-On Zone” cater to audiences of different ages and interests.
The museum’s exhibits integrate science, knowledge, fun, interactivity, and artistry. Using modern display methods such as sound, light, electricity, and computers, they vividly introduce scientific and technological knowledge to the public. Visitors can directly interact with the exhibits, experiencing the joy of science and technology through their senses of sight, hearing, and touch—offering an eye-opening and enriching experience.
The museum’s spherical building, the Planetarium (also known as the Universe Theater), is equipped with an inclined aluminum dome, a planetarium projector, a 360-degree full-dome movie projection system, and various projection devices. Visitors can sit in comfortable seats to watch amazing celestial phenomena, astronomical landscapes, and science adventure films.
The Tianjin Science and Technology Museum offers comprehensive service facilities. You can choose from a multi-functional lecture hall, meeting rooms, reception rooms, and training classrooms to hold various conferences, academic exchanges, and social events. Dining services, sales of science and technology publications, and small commodities provide added convenience and comfort. The Xuri Travel Agency, established by the museum, is uniquely known for its science-themed tour routes, and is highly praised by tourists for its quality service and affordable prices. The Science & Art Exhibition Design Center and the Science & Fun Communication Service Center can design various exhibitions, develop science education exhibits, and create science-themed souvenirs.
