The Nineteen Mound

On January 12, 1928, the workers' and peasants' self-defense army in the Luokou area launched an unsuccessful attack on the Luokou Militia Bureau, resulting in the deaths of 27 self-defense fighters. Luokou fell into mourning — the families of the fallen were unable to come and claim the bodies. Aside from some corpses being taken away by relatives and friends, the bodies of 18 martyrs including Zhang Qimao, Zhang Huashan, Yi Yuansheng, Yuanfasu, Yi Shengcui, Zhang Dagui, Liu Fengnian, Tang Wenshen, and one victim from another locality were left on Yangjia Mountain. The residents of Yangjiayuan immediately raised funds to purchase coffins and buried the nineteen bodies together in a single grave, known as the “Nineteen Mound (Tomb).” The earthen mound is 25 meters long, 1 meter wide, and 0.7 meters high. In front of the tomb stands a bluestone gravestone that is 1 meter tall and 0.4 meters wide, inscribed with the words: “The Tomb of the Nineteen, Erected by the People of Yangjiayuan in the 17th Year of the Republic of China.”
