As one of the more experienced cyclists in Zhuzhou, Tang Wensheng, the legal representative of the Zhuzhou Cycling Association, and fellow rider "Old Cat" viewed the self-guided cycling trip to Taiwan as an opportunity to learn and exchange cycling culture.
Among the riders who participated in the island loop, 13 were from Zhuzhou, with two each from Changsha and Xiangtan. From August 11 to 20, the group set off from Taichung. The route was divided into nine cycling segments based on cities around the island, covering a total distance of 912 kilometers. "Old Cat" explained that to ensure the safety of the team, two experienced local cyclists rode at the front and rear of the 17-member group, with two support vehicles following behind.
Police stations are equipped with drinking water and bike pumps
Due to the strong cycling culture, nearly all coastal cities and towns on Taiwan Island have dedicated rest areas, water stations, and shops. "Some police stations even offer drinking water and camping areas for riders, along with bike pumps," Tang Wensheng recalled.
"Old Cat" remembered the fifth day of the island loop when the 17-person team had just woken up and were warming up to set off, when it suddenly started pouring rain. As everyone hesitated, the Taiwanese cycling leader said, "Let’s go as planned." That day, the thin raincoats the riders wore didn’t keep them dry, and they got completely soaked—but they felt especially exhilarated.
Beauty and danger coexist
Although they successfully completed the ride, both Tang Wensheng and "Old Cat" felt a sense of regret: the coastal mountain road from Zhiben in Taitung to Fengbin in Hualien is one of the most stunning scenic spots in Taiwan, with the deep blue Pacific Ocean right by the cliffs. But due to the rugged terrain and risk of landslides during typhoons and heavy rains, all riders had to take the sightseeing train instead.
The two mentioned that what left the deepest impression during the ride was the warmth and politeness of the Taiwanese people. When a young man in the group accidentally fell off his bike, a middle-aged female farmer who happened to be passing by on her motorcycle immediately stopped to check on his injury and even prepared to call for an ambulance to take him to the hospital. Along the way, every so often, a family driving by would slow down, roll down the window, smile, give a thumbs-up, and repeatedly say "Zan!" (meaning "Great!")
