Former Residence of Yang Dezhi

The former residence of Yang Dezhi is a national AAA-level tourist attraction, a cultural relics protection unit of Hunan Province, a classic red tourism site, and a patriotic education base.

The former residence of Yang Dezhi is located in Xianglu Village, Nanzhou Town, Zhuzhou County, Zhuzhou City (formerly Sanwangchong Village, Nanyangqiao Township).

In January 1911, Yang Dezhi was born in Nanyangqiao, Liling County (now part of Nanzhou Town, Zhuzhou County). He joined the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army in 1928 and became a member of the Communist Party of China in October of the same year. Starting in 1930, he served as a platoon leader, company commander, regimental commander, deputy division commander, division commander, column commander, field army commander, and commander of the 2nd Corps (later renamed the 19th Corps) of the North China Military Region of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as deputy commander and then commander of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, commander of the Jinan Military Region, Wuhan Military Region, and Kunming Military Region, vice minister of national defense, chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, deputy secretary-general of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, and member of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. He was awarded the rank of general in 1955. He was a member of the 11th Central Committee Secretariat, a member of the 12th Central Politburo, and a standing committee member of the Central Advisory Commission. He passed away in Beijing on October 25, 1994, at the age of 83.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yang Dezhi’s birth, in 2010, the Zhuzhou County Party Committee and County Government renovated the former residence and established an exhibition room next to it dedicated to Yang Dezhi’s life and achievements, displaying the general’s personal belongings and related historical materials.

The former residence of Yang Dezhi was designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit by the People's Government of Hunan Province in January 2011; in November 2011, it was recognized as a patriotic education base of Zhuzhou City by the Publicity Department of the Zhuzhou Municipal Committee.
