Tomb of Yuan Zirang

The Tomb of Yuan Zirang is a municipal-level cultural heritage protection unit in Chenzhou.

The Tomb of Yuan Zirang is located in Lishushan Village, Chenjiang Township, Beihu District, Chenzhou, and dates back to the Ming Dynasty.

In 2012, it was designated as part of the third batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection units by the Chenzhou Municipal People's Government.

Protected area: starting from the tomb site, extending 30 meters in all four directions.

Construction control zone: extends 20 meters outward from the boundary of the protected area in all four directions.

Yuan Zirang (dates of birth and death unknown), courtesy name Zijian, also known as Master of Seventy-One Peaks, was a native of Chenzhou (now Chenzhou County, Hunan Province). He was a phonologist during the Ming Dynasty.

In 1585 (the 13th year of the Wanli reign), he passed the imperial examination at the provincial level, and in 1601 (the 29th year of the Wanli reign), he became a presented scholar (jinshi). He was appointed Prefect of Jiading, later transferred to be Prefect of Meizhou, where he achieved remarkable administrative accomplishments and was promoted to Vice Minister of War. He excelled in the study of tonal phonology and in 1603 (the 31st year of the Wanli reign) completed the ten-volume work "Zixue Yuanyuan," which has been passed down through generations. He provided a detailed explanation of the phonological methods recorded in the anonymous text "Sisheng Dengzi," presenting them in a well-organized manner. He also expanded the phonological categories to forty-eight types.
