Ancient Architectural Complex of Xiaotaoyuan Village

The Ancient Architectural Complex of Xiaotaoyuan Village is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hunan Province.

Xiaotaoyuan Village, located in Heting Town, Ningyuan County, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province, was first built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty. It is recognized as part of the third batch of China’s Traditional Villages. The village has over 160 households and a population of around 600. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, it was considered a paradise on earth by its former residents. Today, several well-preserved ancient residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties remain, featuring symmetrical courtyard layouts. These structures are closely arranged and interconnected. It is now one of the villages in Ningyuan County with the longest history and best-preserved ancient houses, holding significant historical, cultural, and tourism value.

In ancient feudal Chinese society, family values were deeply rooted. Often, an entire village was home to one or several families sharing the same surname, who would typically establish their own ancestral temples to worship their forebears. Such temples were generally called “ancestral halls,” which could be classified as clan halls, branch halls, or family halls. Ancestral halls also served as social gathering spaces for the family; some clan halls even had schools where the descendants of the clan studied. For these reasons, ancestral hall buildings were usually larger and more imposing than ordinary residences. They also served as halls that embodied national spirit. In Xiaotaoyuan Village, these halls are now used as venues for celebrations and funerals.

In 2019, the Ancient Architectural Complex of Xiaotaoyuan Village was included in the tenth list of Provincial-Level Cultural Heritage Protection Units in Hunan Province.
