Early Buildings of the Anhua Tea Factory

The early buildings of the Anhua Tea Factory are a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The early buildings of the former First Anhua Tea Factory (including the Yutongyong Tea Firm and the factory built with Soviet aid) were constructed in 1902. Due to their specific functional purposes and historical evolution, they hold significant historical value, especially in terms of architectural technology and artistry. Among them, the wooden tea warehouse built in 1902 has now become the largest, most scientifically designed, and best-preserved century-old tea warehouse still in existence in China’s tea processing industry. The ventilation, moisture-proofing, and other technical measures adopted then remain valuable examples of passive energy-saving architecture today. This article analyzes the value of typical structures within the early building complex of the tea factory, highlighting the architectural and artistic achievements attained.

The renovation project of the early buildings of the Anhua Tea Factory commenced in July 2015 and was completed in January 2016. Comprehensive maintenance was carried out on the lean-to tea warehouses, the southern single-door tea warehouse, the northern single-door tea warehouse, the sawtooth-shaped workshop, and the west gate. The total renovation area was 5,379 square meters, with a total investment of 8 million yuan.

Dongping Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Anhua County. It is the seat of the county government. Established as Dongping Town in 1955, it was renamed Chengguan Town in 1956, placed under Chengguan Commune in 1960, reinstated as Chengguan Town in 1980, and reinstated as Dongping Town in 1982. In 1995, it merged with Huangshaping Town, Chengbuping Township, and parts of villages from Zhongdi Township, Yanglin Township, and Qingshanyuan Township to form the current Dongping Town.
