Xiao Yan Town: Overview of Xiao Yan Town

Xiao Yan Town is located in the northeast of the county, 30 kilometers from the county seat. It covers a total area of 177.05 square kilometers and governs 46 villages and 4 residential committees. In 2000, the total population was 36,217, including 5,393 non-agricultural residents. Xiao Yan is one of the ancient towns of Anhua. Legend has it that in the 17th year of the Jiading era of the Southern Song Dynasty, Emperor Lizong’s son, Emperor Lizong, passed through here on his way from Shaowu to the capital (Hangzhou) to ascend the throne. Suddenly, Shimen Pool experienced a sudden flood, forcing him to stay for a whole day—hence the name “Xiao Yan” (Little Flood). Xiao Yan is also the hometown of Tao Shu, the Governor-General of Liangjiang during the Qing Dynasty. Today, Tao Shu’s tomb, the Wenlan Pagoda, and the imperial inscription “Yin Xin…” bestowed by Emperor Daoguang are still preserved. More detailed information about Xiao Yan Town++
