White Horse Cave

White Horse Cave is located at the western mouth of the Xiling Gorge in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, northwest of Yichang. It faces the Yangtze River, neighbors the Gezhouba Dam to the left, and leans against the Xiasha Stream to the right, standing across the stream from the world-renowned Three Visitors Cave. Legend has it that White Horse Cave got its name because when the monk Tang Sanzang and his three disciples, along with their white dragon horse, passed through this area on their journey to the West to retrieve Buddhist scriptures, the white dragon horse once stayed in this cave. Stories about the white horse have long been told around the ancient Yiling region. The White Horse Cave Scenic Area boasts pleasant scenery. Upon entering the scenic zone, visitors are greeted by a massive white marble statue of a white horse standing in the center of the gateway. The statue weighs 98 tons, stands 6.68 meters tall, and measures 8.8 meters in length, carved from 13 huge pieces of white marble. The cave itself stretches over 2,100 meters in length and covers a total area of 10,000 square meters. It features 11 scenic zones—including “White Horse Hiding,” “Fairy Music in an Exquisite Pavilion,” “Jade Vase Pouring Dew,” and “Guanyin Manifesting Holiness”—and 37 attractions. Visitors can take a boat into the cave to explore its wonders, where illuminated waters and painted boats gliding across the surface create the illusion of a dreamlike journey.

Transportation: Visitors can take the No. 10 tourist bus directly from downtown Yichang to the scenic area.
