Southern Folk Houses

The Southern Folk Houses are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Southern Folk Houses are located in Nanbian Village, Huanghua Township, Yiling District, Yichang City. Originally built in the sixth year of the Jiaqing reign during the Qing Dynasty (1801), they consist of two structurally identical complexes — “Laohao” and “Baohe” — situated about 200 meters apart. Facing north, the “Laohao” complex covers a land area of 665.3 square meters and a building area of 965.3 square meters. The “Baohe” complex covers a land area of 949.86 square meters and a building area of 1349.86 square meters. Both are built with brick and wood structures, featuring flush gable roofs covered with clay tiles, fireproof walls on both sides, and decorations of floral, bird, and animal patterns on the eaves and walls. These folk houses represent one of the better-preserved architectural complexes in the Three Gorges region and hold significant value for the study of the architectural history and culture of the river valley area. On October 7, 2019, the Southern Folk Houses were included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
