Jiuchongwu Ancient Residential Complex is a cultural heritage site protected by Hubei Province.

Jiuchongwu Ancient Residential Complex

Located in Xiongfian Village, Huangzhan Town, Dawu County, it is a Qing Dynasty–era building. The complex faces south with its back to the mountains, featuring 11 courtyards and 30 skylights, stretching 118 meters from north to south and 25 meters from east to west, covering a total area of nearly 3,000 square meters. The front hall consists of six rooms (one entrance gate room, two main halls, one antechamber, and two wing rooms on each side). The single-courtyard section is 18 meters wide and 11 meters deep, while the wing rooms are 4 meters wide and 5 meters deep. The courtyard and open space cover an area of 200 square meters. In the northeast corner of the rear yard there is an ancient well built from blue stone slabs, with a square mouth and a depth of 15 meters. Jiuchongwu was originally built by the Jiangxi-based Xiong family, who migrated to Hubei in the mid-Ming Dynasty, and was expanded multiple times afterward. It is an outstanding historical building that integrates both Hubei and Jiangxi cultural elements. It not only witnessed the last large-scale migration in ancient Chinese history, but also made significant contributions to China’s modern revolutionary history: in 1946, during the Central Plains Breakout, Comrade Chen Shaomin, a leader of the New Fourth Army, resided in Jiuchongwu and commanded military operations there.
