The Ancient Residence of the Kan Family is a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.

The Ancient Residence of the Kan Family

Located in Xiaring Village, Paishi Town, Yangxin County, it was initially built in the mid-Qing Dynasty. The structure has a rectangular layout, extending from east to west and spanning from north to south, covering an area of approximately 3,500 square meters. It includes an ancestral hall, a council chamber, a reception hall, a kitchen, a teahouse, and wing rooms. With the ancestral hall as the central axis, the buildings are arranged sequentially from east to west and rise in elevation from south to north, surrounded by tall enclosing walls. The two-story building features a single-eave brick-and-timber structure with a post-and-lintel framework, gabled walls carrying purlins, and tiled roofing with small blue tiles. Courtyards, corridors, and drainage ditches are paved with bluestone slabs; the front facade has three main gates, while the east and west gables have two side gates. A total of 108 wing rooms are nestled within a grid of three vertical and three horizontal passageways, and 36 courtyards function as independent units. About 30 meters to the west lies a private school. This residence fully demonstrates the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional folk architecture and holds significant research value.

Xiaring Village: Xiaring Village is situated in the southwestern part of Paishi Town. To the east it borders Chenshan Village, to the west it connects with Fushan Village, to the south it lies adjacent to Shiqiu Village of Longgang Town, and to the north it faces Shuxi Village of Longgang Town. It is 24 kilometers away from the Paishi Town government. The village comprises 8 villager groups, with 258 households and a total population of 1,465, including 24 Party members. The arable land area exceeds 1,083 mu (approximately 72.2 hectares), including over 317 mu (about 21.1 hectares) of paddy fields and more than 766 mu (around 51 hectares) of dry land.
