Chess Square

Chess Square is a landmark project built by our city to host the first China Chess Culture Festival. It is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Jingcheng Road and National Highway 310, closely connected to Success Square and the Stadium.

The overall layout of the square represents a mid-game chess position titled "A Swift Leap," covering an area of 7,040 square meters. Each chess piece has a diameter of six meters, a height of fifty centimeters, and weighs over twenty thousand kilograms. The square features sculptures of Liu Bang and Xiang Yu, the two main figures of the Chu-Han Contention, each standing five meters tall and weighing approximately thirty thousand kilograms. Liu Bang is depicted riding a chariot, while Xiang Yu rides his famous horse, Wu Zui, both poised on opposite sides of the Honggou (the dividing trench), gazing intently at each other as if ready to renew their battle.

It is said that Xingyang is the birthplace of Chinese chess. Over two thousand two hundred years ago, Xiang Yu, the Hegemon-King of Western Chu, and Liu Bang, the King of Han, waged a fierce four-year war with Xingyang as the main battleground. The Honggou in Xingyang served as the dividing line between their territories, splitting the land in half — one of the most dramatic episodes in Chinese history. As the smoke of war gradually faded into history, the Chu River and Han Border were forever engraved on the Chinese chessboard, earning Xingyang the title of the Capital of Chinese Chess.
